CIPC Company Status: What Each Status Means and What to Do

3 MIN READ · CIPC GUIDES

Your company's status at CIPC is public information. Anyone can look it up on CIPC eServices or BizPortal. Banks, clients, landlords, and procurement officers check it routinely before entering into any agreement with your business. Understanding what each status means — and what to do about it — is essential for any business owner.

How deregistration happens

Deregistration does not happen overnight. CIPC follows a process that gives companies multiple opportunities to correct their status before final removal. The sequence is Non-Compliant (after one missed return), then In Deregistration Process (after two or more missed returns), and finally AR Final Deregistered. At any point before the final status is reached you can stop the process by filing all outstanding returns and updating your Beneficial Ownership Declaration.

Reinstating a deregistered company

If your company has been Finally Deregistered, you will need to apply for reinstatement. This involves submitting a formal application, paying all outstanding fees and penalties, and in some cases providing additional documentation depending on how long the company has been deregistered and whether it has any assets or creditors. Reinstatement takes longer than simply keeping your returns current, and there is no guarantee of approval. Prevention is always the better approach.
